Prostate Gland

The prostate gland, in the embryonic life, develops in the second month of first trimester of pregnancy. As referred to in the Britannica Concise Encyclopedia, prostate gland is located within the male reproductive system. This male reproductive organ is of the shape of chest nut and is present just under the bladder. In the prostate, there are 15-20 branches of tubular glands, that make up into lobes. The dense connective tissue is present between the clusters of the gland and a gelatinous outline is formed around the gland, which is continuous with the wall of the bladder. The urethra(it carries urine from bladder and also carries semen while ejaculation) is surrounded by prostate gland at the lower end of the urinary bladder. The ejaculatory ducts of the seminal vesicles penetrates through the prostate and empty into the urethra. As told by J.P Blandy and B.Lytton , the top of the gland is rounded and then it tapers,  as it goes down to a narrow point. It is made up of two tissues- glandular and muscular tissue.

The secretion of the prostate gland is thick, milky and alkaline (base). The alkaline nature of the prostatic fluid, helps in the mobility of the sperms. Seminal fluid consists of secretions from the testes, seminal vesicles and prostate gland. Prostate fluid contributes to the seminal fluid to a great extent. About 15-30% of the seminal fluid, is from prostate. The secretion from the prostate gland neutralise's the acid nature of the vaginal discharge. The neutralization of the vaginal discharge is required for the fertilization. The prostate secretion has protein content below1%. It consists of zinc, citric acid, and proteolytic enzymes. Prostate Gland is found in male reproductive system of all the mammals.
